In the laboratory we like to maintain a good atmosphere. Our most recent approach was to create our portraits with fluorescent bacteria. We grew Escherichia coli expressing the super folded Green Fluorescent Protein on LB agar plates.

Bordetella species that produce adenylate cyclase toxin form a hemolytic halo on blood BG agar plates. The halo originates in lysis of red blood cells by this toxin.
