Hi! I am Jana Kamanová. I am the PI. I find microbes and their virulence factors very cool! I did my PhD in the laboratory of Prof. Peter Sebo at Institute of Microbiology in Prague, where I worked on Bordetella adenylate cyclase toxin and its interaction with dendritic cells and macrophages. I then continue to pursue my fascination by host-pathogen interaction in the laboratory of Prof. Jorge Galan at Yale University, working on type III effectors of Salmonella Typhimurium.

Hello, I am Ivana Malcová. I am an expert on yeast molecular and cellular biology who masters fluorescence microscopy. I got my PhD in Microbiology from Czech Academy of Sciences. I have always been fascinated by the processes in the eukaryotic cells and our ability to visualize them. For several years, I have visualized the stress response and the protein quality control in the yeast cells. Currently, I use my experience to uncover the manipulation of the host cells by the type III effector proteins. We can learn so much just by looking!

Hi, I am Ondřej Černý. I obtained my PhD from the Charles University in Prague under the supervision of Prof. Peter Šebo from the Institute of Microbiology. I specialised on the inhibition of bactericidal mechanisms of innate immune cells by the adenylate cyclase toxin of Bordetella pertussis. Then I moved to study the influence of intracellular Salmonella on dendritic cells under supervision of Prof. David Holden at the MRC Centre for Molecular Bacteriology and Infection. Lately, I get fascinated with the heterogeneity in behaviour of bacterial pathogens.

Hi, I am Hana Michova. I got my double-degree PhD in Microbiology from the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague and ONIRIS Nantes (France). I spent many years researching the adaptive mechanisms of Campylobacter jejuni that facilitate its survival inside and outside the host. Today, I use my expertise to decipher the interactions between the opportunistic pathogen Aeromonas spp. and its hosts, such as free-living amoebae and a zebrafish animal model.

Hello, I am Milada Kambová, I am a PhD student in the lab. I have done my Master’s in Molecular Biology at Charles University in Prague. I would like to use my expertise in gene expression to find new regulatory mechanisms involved in the infection of macrophages by Salmonella.

Hi, I am Martin Zmuda and I am a PhD student to the lab. I completed my Master’s in Microbiology at the University of Chemistry and Technology. I’ve always been fascinated by small living things, that’s why I continued my career in the field of Science. My research focuses on Bordetella bronchiseptica and its mysterious type III effector BteA. This protein has an unknown mechanism of action with significant cytotoxicity to the eukaryotic cells which needs to be unraveled.

Hi! I am Alona Dreus, I come from Ukraine and I am a fresh PhD student. In the lab I work with Salmonella Typhimurium. I am studying the effectors translocated through the T3SS during the infection while focusing on the importance of their time of release. I hope my Master’s degree in Biology from Oles Honchar Dnipro National University and my practical experience in the cell culture laboratory ‘’Preci’’ will help me with it.

¡Hola! I am Tania Romero Allsop. I come from the sunny city of Málaga in Spain. I graduated in Microbiology at the University of the Basque Country. I am particularly interested to know how bacterial pathogens affect the human health and how we can improve it through research. In the lab, I work on the mechanism of action of type III effector protein BteA of Bordetella pertussis, the causative agent of whooping cough.

Hi! I am Barbora Pravdová and I graduated in Zoology at Univerzita Palackého in Olomouc. I partially left behind my animals to focus on the interaction between pathogenic bacteria and the host cell. In the lab, I work with animal models and human nasal epithelial cells where I am trying to understand how bacteria affect the host immune system and physiology.

Hi! I am Eliška Sedláčková. I am currently doing my Master’s in Biochemistry and Cell Biology at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague. I have always been fascinated by microorganisms and their interactions with hosts. In the lab, I focus on the mechanism of cell death induced by the effector protein BteA of Bordetella spp.

Hello! I am Denisa Vondrová. I am pursuing my Master’s in Microbiology and Genetic Engineering at University of Chemistry and Technology. In the lab, I study Aeromonas, a genus of emerging waterborne pathogens. Specifically, I focus on quorum sensing systems, which bacteria use to coordinate various social behaviours, such as biofilm formation or host invasion.
